GAF vs CertainTeed Shingles: An Honest Breakdown from a Contractor Certified by Both

Published April 2026 • 14-minute read • By the Ridgeline Construction Team

We install both GAF and CertainTeed roofs every week across North Alabama and the Gulf Coast. That puts us in a position most contractors cannot claim: we hold GAF President’s Club status (top 1% nationwide) and we are a CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster. Neither brand pays us to write this. Our license numbers (AL #52235, FL CCC1331346) are on every permit we pull, and our name is on every warranty we hand over. That’s the only interest we’re protecting here.

So when a homeowner in Huntsville asks whether to go with GAF or CertainTeed — or when someone in Spanish Fort wonders which shingle holds up better against Gulf Coast storms — we give them the same answer we’re giving you now: both are excellent, and the right choice depends on your specific situation. This article walks you through every factor that matters so you can decide with real information, not marketing copy.

The Companies Behind the Shingles

GAF: North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer

GAF was founded in 1886 in New Jersey and has grown into the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. The company operates more than two dozen manufacturing plants across the United States and generates over $3 billion in annual roofing sales. GAF’s size gives it advantages in distribution — their products are available through nearly every roofing supply house in the country, and their contractor certification network spans tens of thousands of roofers.

GAF is particularly known for the depth of its certification tiers. Their Master Elite program represents the top 3% of contractors; their President’s Club recognizes the top 1%. GAF Master Elite contractors can offer the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — an enhanced warranty for qualifying residential systems. Ridgeline earned its President’s Club award in 2024.

CertainTeed: A Century of Building Products, Backed by Saint-Gobain

CertainTeed was established in 1904 and is today a division of Saint-Gobain, a French multinational with more than 350 years in the building materials business. That parent company backing gives CertainTeed remarkable financial stability and R&D resources. CertainTeed operates more than 60 manufacturing facilities across North America and produces a full range of exterior and interior building products — roofing, siding, insulation, and more.

CertainTeed’s reputation is strongest at the premium and designer tier. Contractors often describe their Landmark series as “the product that doesn’t disappoint.” Their SELECT ShingleMaster certification is CertainTeed’s equivalent of GAF’s Master Elite — a credential that requires documented training, quality standards, and customer satisfaction commitments. Ridgeline holds SELECT ShingleMaster status, which allows us to issue CertainTeed’s top-tier 5-Star warranty.

GAF vs CertainTeed: Full Product Tier Comparison

Both manufacturers organize their shingles into tiers ranging from entry-level architectural to ultra-premium designer products. Here’s how the full lineups map to each other:

The highlighted row — the premium impact-resistant tier — is where the most important decision gets made for Alabama and Gulf Coast homeowners. Both GAF’s ArmorShield II and CertainTeed’s Landmark Premium carry UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance, the highest rating available. We cover that in detail in the head-to-head specs section below.

Key Technology Differences: How Each Brand Actually Works

Nailing Systems: LayerLock vs NailTrak

GAF’s LayerLock technology (used in the UHDZ line) bonds shingle layers together during manufacturing, creating a fused laminate rather than two independent layers. The result is a more structurally unified shingle with a wider nailing zone called the StrikeZone. When a nail lands anywhere in that zone — which is noticeably larger than a standard shingle — the shingle achieves full wind resistance without requiring perfect nail placement. This speeds up installation and reduces variability between crews.

CertainTeed uses NailTrak — a high-visibility nailing strip built into the face of the shingle. Think of it as a painted target. Roofers can see exactly where to drive nails, which produces cleaner, more consistent installations even with less experienced crews. NailTrak doesn’t bond layers the way LayerLock does, but CertainTeed’s shingles are generally heavier (by 20–60 lbs per square), which provides its own form of stability.

SBS Modification: Who Uses It and Why It Matters

Standard asphalt shingles use oxidized asphalt as the binder — reliable but brittle in extreme cold and prone to cracking from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modification blends rubber polymers into the asphalt, creating a more flexible, elastic matrix that moves with temperature changes rather than cracking.

GAF’s ArmorShield II uses SBS-modified asphalt specifically to achieve its Class 4 impact rating. The rubber content absorbs the energy of a hail strike rather than transmitting it directly to the fiberglass mat. CertainTeed’s Landmark Premium achieves Class 4 rating through a multi-layer heavy construction approach rather than SBS modification — it uses more mass and a reinforced fiberglass mat base.

For Alabama homeowners: both approaches work. The SBS route (ArmorShield II) tends to perform better over a wider temperature range. The mass-based route (Landmark Premium) offers that extra weight and thickness visible in the finished roof’s profile.

Algae Resistance: A Real Difference in the Southeast

Black algae streaking is the number one aesthetic complaint we hear from homeowners in North Alabama and along the coast. The warm, humid climate is ideal for Gloeocapsa magma — the algae strain responsible for those dark streaks.

GAF’s eligible Timberline UHDZ shingles carry a 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration. Eligible HDZ and AS II shingles carry the 25-year StainGuard Plus limited warranty. Product labeling and warranty conditions matter. Compare the current product-specific CertainTeed terms separately instead of assuming that an entire brand has one algae warranty.

GAF vs CertainTeed Warranty: The Full Picture

Shingle warranties confuse homeowners because the numbers sound similar on the surface. Here’s what each level actually covers — and where the real gap between the brands appears.

GAF

GAF Warranty Tiers (via Ridgeline)

  • System Plus: Lifetime limited manufacturing-defect coverage with 50 non-prorated years for qualifying individual-owned detached homes. No added GAF workmanship coverage. Registration and transfer conditions apply.
  • Silver Pledge: Lifetime limited manufacturing-defect coverage with 50 non-prorated years for qualifying individual-owned detached homes. Workmanship coverage is 10 years for Timberline NS, HDZ, and HDZ RS, or 15 years for UHDZ, AS II, and qualifying Designer shingles. Eligibility, registration, and transfer conditions apply.
  • Golden Pledge: For qualifying individual-owned detached homes, lifetime limited manufacturing-defect coverage includes 50 non-prorated years. Lifetime limited workmanship includes 25 non-prorated years for Timberline HDZ and HDZ RS, or 30 for UHDZ, AS II, and qualifying Designer shingles. Benefits reduce afterward. Available through GAF Master Elite contractors on eligible systems; registration and transfer conditions apply.
CertainTeed

CertainTeed Warranty Tiers (via Ridgeline)

  • SureStart PLUS 5-Star: 50yr materials, 25yr workmanship, transferable (15yr transfer window, no fee)
  • 10-year SureStart: Baseline full replacement coverage period
  • Wind warranty: 15yr/110 MPH standard; upgrade to 160 MPH with qualifying system products

GAF-backed workmanship coverage: Golden Pledge provides limited coverage for qualifying installation errors under GAF’s warranty terms. It is distinct from a contractor-only promise. Silver Pledge also includes GAF-backed workmanship coverage, with a different term. Compare the actual GAF and CertainTeed warranty documents proposed for your roof. Ask each manufacturer how coverage applies if the installer stops operating.

GAF Master Elite contractors can offer Golden Pledge on qualifying systems. Ridgeline holds Master Elite certification and a President’s Club award. The award is separate from the product, installation, and registration requirements that determine a roof’s warranty eligibility.

When Ridgeline Recommends GAF

For the majority of residential roof replacements across our North Alabama service area — Huntsville, Madison, Athens, Decatur, Florence — GAF is our first recommendation, and it’s the brand we install most often. Here’s why:

  • The Golden Pledge warranty. Eligible roofs can receive lifetime limited workmanship coverage, with a 25- or 30-year non-prorated period determined by the shingles. We identify the proposed warranty and qualifying system in the estimate so you can compare coverage and price together.
  • Hail-prone North Alabama. The Timberline ArmorShield II’s SBS-modified asphalt and UL 2218 Class 4 rating directly address North Alabama’s hail risk. Our previous article covers Alabama hail data in detail — the short version is that we see enough Class 4 hail events annually that impact resistance translates directly to roof longevity.
  • Algae coverage by product. Eligible UHDZ shingles carry a 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO limited warranty. Eligible HDZ and AS II shingles carry the 25-year StainGuard Plus limited warranty. These warranties address specified blue-green algae discoloration and have conditions and exclusions.
  • Broader color selection. The HDZ and ArmorShield II lines offer 20+ colors versus the UHDZ’s 6 or the Landmark Premium’s 4 — better for homeowners with specific aesthetic requirements.
  • Insurance discounts. Many Alabama carriers offer 5–15% premium discounts for Class 4 roofs. ArmorShield II documentation makes that eligibility straightforward to claim.

When Ridgeline Recommends CertainTeed

CertainTeed earns our recommendation in specific situations — and when it fits, it fits well.

  • Gulf Coast wind zones. The Landmark Premium’s 160 MPH wind warranty upgrade (available with CertainTeed starter and ridge products) is competitive for coastal Alabama and Florida Panhandle homes. Coastal wind exposure is a different threat profile than inland hail, and Landmark Premium’s mass-heavy construction handles sustained wind load well.
  • Aesthetic requirements. CertainTeed’s Max Def color palette on the Landmark Pro produces a depth of color that many homeowners prefer for architectural-style homes. If a customer has a specific color vision and the Landmark Pro’s 17 Max Def options get them there while the GAF lineup doesn’t, CertainTeed is the right call.
  • Luxury designer projects. The Grand Manor is a genuinely exceptional product — heavy, layered, with a cut profile that closely approximates real slate. For high-end homes where the roof is a design element, Grand Manor competes with anything GAF offers at the luxury tier.
  • Existing CertainTeed systems. If a home already has CertainTeed ridge cap, starter, and underlayment in good condition, and we’re doing a partial replacement or repair, maintaining the system integrity with CertainTeed products preserves warranty continuity.

Gulf Coast Note

For homes in Spanish Fort, Daphne, Fairhope, Pensacola, Navarre, and Gulf Breeze — wind resistance is the primary spec. CertainTeed’s Landmark Premium with the wind warranty upgrade to 160 MPH is a strong option. So is GAF’s ArmorShield II at 130 MPH rated wind resistance. What matters more than brand is correct installation with qualifying system products — the warranty only covers what’s installed to spec. Both manufacturers void wind warranties when non-qualifying underlayments or starters are used.

What Do GAF and CertainTeed Shingles Actually Cost in Alabama?

The honest answer is that material cost is rarely the deciding factor between these two brands — the gap between comparable products is usually $30–$100 per square. On an average 2,000 sq ft roof (roughly 20 squares), that’s $600–$2,000 difference. Workmanship quality, warranty terms, and product-to-climate fit matter more over a 20-year roof life than that spread.

That said, here are realistic installed cost ranges for North Alabama (Q1 2026, standard pitch residential):

GAF Timberline HDZ

$380–$480

per square, installed

GAF ArmorShield II

$520–$650

per square, installed

CertainTeed Landmark

$420–$520

per square, installed

CertainTeed Landmark Premium

$580–$720

per square, installed

Gulf Coast pricing typically runs 8–12% higher due to supply chain logistics. We provide written estimates with exact per-square breakdowns before any project begins.

Common Questions About GAF vs CertainTeed

Both brands perform well in Alabama’s climate. For North Alabama — where hail is the primary weather threat — GAF Timberline AS II’s SBS-modified Class 4 shingle and 25-year StainGuard Plus limited algae warranty make it our most-recommended product. For Gulf Coast Alabama (Mobile Bay area, Pensacola) where wind is the primary concern, CertainTeed Landmark Premium’s 160 MPH wind warranty upgrade is a strong argument. Neither brand is universally “better” — the right choice depends on your location, budget, and aesthetic preferences.

The current GAF Golden Pledge Limited Warranty provides lifetime limited manufacturing-defect coverage with 50 non-prorated years for qualifying single-family detached homes owned by individuals. Its lifetime limited workmanship coverage has 25 non-prorated years for Timberline HDZ and HDZ RS, or 30 years for UHDZ, AS II, and qualifying Designer shingles. Benefits reduce afterward. GAF Master Elite contractors can offer it on qualifying systems; a President’s Club award is not required. Ridgeline earned its President’s Club award in 2024. Review the current GAF warranty guide and the warranty proposed for your roof. Existing installations keep their issued terms.

Both brands offer limited warranties. GAF’s eligible enhanced warranties provide lifetime limited manufacturing-defect coverage with 50 non-prorated years for qualifying individual-owned detached homes; this is not automatic coverage for every GAF roof. In real-world performance, both hold up well when installed correctly. CertainTeed shingles are generally heavier per square (240–270 lbs versus GAF’s 210–228 lbs), which some contractors associate with greater longevity and a more premium finished appearance. GAF’s UHDZ line uses LayerLock technology to bond shingle layers together, which creates structural integrity through manufacturing rather than mass. The more significant factor in long-term performance is correct installation — a premium shingle installed with poor technique will fail before an entry-level shingle installed properly.

For coastal Alabama and Florida Panhandle homes, wind resistance is the primary spec. CertainTeed’s Landmark Premium can be upgraded to a 160 MPH wind warranty when installed with CertainTeed starter strips and hip/ridge products. Eligible GAF Timberline UHDZ systems can qualify for the 15-year WindProven limited wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed limitation when installed with the required accessories. Warranty exclusions still apply; this does not mean a roof will withstand every storm. GAF’s ArmorShield II carries a 130 MPH wind rating. In all cases, the wind warranty depends on installing the correct system components — shingles alone are never enough. Both brands have Florida Compliance documentation for non-HVHZ installations.

Yes, with the right product. Many Alabama and Florida homeowners insurance carriers offer premium discounts for UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant roofing. Both GAF ArmorShield II and CertainTeed Landmark Premium qualify as Class 4 products. Typical discounts in Alabama run 5–15%, though some carriers in Baldwin and Mobile County offer more in conjunction with FORTIFIED designation. The discount is triggered by the Class 4 rating — either brand’s qualifying product works. Your carrier will need the UL 2218 Class 4 documentation, which we provide with every completed project.

Both GAF and CertainTeed are recognized premium brands that add real value to a home sale. What matters most for resale is having a transferable warranty in good standing. GAF Golden Pledge permits one transfer, subject to the issued warranty’s timing and notification rules; the new owner must notify GAF within one year under the current sample. CertainTeed’s 5-Star warranty transfers within a 15-year window, also at no cost. Either brand beats a roof with no manufacturer warranty documentation at all — which is unfortunately common when homeowners use uncertified contractors.

We install GAF for the majority of our North Alabama residential replacements, in part because Golden Pledge is available on qualifying systems and because the ArmorShield II addresses our region’s hail exposure better than any comparable product. On the Gulf Coast — Spanish Fort, Mobile, Pensacola — we install a higher proportion of CertainTeed, particularly Landmark Premium, where the wind warranty upgrade to 160 MPH is a meaningful spec for coastal homeowners. The honest answer is that we follow the specs, not brand loyalty. We’d rather install the right product and sleep at night than push one brand because it’s convenient for us.
