What Happened

A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms crossed the Tennessee River into Madison County at 3:44 PM CDT on Saturday, March 7. The National Weather Service in Huntsville issued Severe Thunderstorm Warning HUN-SV-W-0020 at 3:44 PM after dual-pol radar detected a hail core with 1.5″ stones embedded in the leading edge of a mesoscale convective system tracking northeast at 45 mph.

The warned area encompassed western Madison County from the Limestone County line through downtown Huntsville and northeast into the Harvest–Meridianville corridor. The storm exited the county by 5:30 PM after impacting an area roughly 8 miles wide and 25 miles long.

Eleven trained spotter reports were filed with the NWS between 4:00 PM and 5:15 PM. The largest confirmed hail — 1.5″ in diameter — was reported near the intersection of US-72 and Jeff Road in Madison. Wind gusts peaked at 65 mph at Huntsville International Airport (HSV ASOS) during the storm’s passage.

NWS Warning Summary

Severe Thunderstorm Warning • Issued 3:44 PM CDT • Expired 5:30 PM CDT • Hazards: 1.50″ hail, 65 mph wind gusts • Source: Radar confirmed, spotter verified • WFO: Huntsville, AL (HUN)

Damage Assessment

At 1.5″, hail this size falls squarely in the High damage category for residential roofing. Quarter-sized and larger hail has enough mass and velocity to crack architectural shingles on impact, exposing the fiberglass mat underneath. The 65 mph wind gusts compound the damage — wind-driven hail strikes at a lower angle, affecting more surface area per stone and pushing impacts onto windward roof faces.

Roof AgeShingle TypeDamage LikelihoodTypical Findings

15+ yearsAny typeVery High (80–90%)Fractures, punctures, accelerated weathering
Any age3-TabVery High (80–85%)Tab cracking, tear-offs, missing shingle sections

Metal components are also at risk. Roof vents, pipe boots, drip edge, and valley flashing typically show circular dent patterns. Gutters on south and west faces — the storm-facing sides — are the most commonly damaged. Vinyl siding on upper stories and skylight glass should also be inspected for impact marks.

What to look for from the ground

  • Granule accumulation in gutters and at downspout outlets
  • Circular dents on aluminum gutter faces or downspouts
  • Dings on window trim, mailbox tops, or fence cap rails
  • Marks on AC condenser housing or outdoor furniture (same force hit your roof)
  • Cracks or chips on vinyl siding, especially south and west walls
  • Soft, spongy spots on painted wood trim or fascia boards

Insurance & Claims Timeline

Alabama does not impose a statutory deadline for homeowner’s insurance claims, but most policies require “prompt” notice — typically within one year. Evidence deteriorates quickly: a single heavy rain can wash away displaced granules, and summer heat causes bruised shingles to seal over their damage. Filing sooner produces stronger documentation and faster payouts.

  • Day 1–7: Document what you can see
Photograph gutters, siding, AC units, and any metal surfaces showing dents. Note the storm date (March 7, 2026) for your claim. Do not walk on the roof.
  • Day 7–14: Get a professional roof inspection
A certified inspector photographs and measures every impact point on the roof. This inspection report becomes the evidentiary backbone of your insurance claim.
  • Day 14–30: File your claim and meet the adjuster
Your insurance company sends an adjuster. Having the inspection report at this stage typically produces a more thorough damage assessment. Your contractor can meet the adjuster on-site.
  • Day 30–45: Supplement if the estimate is short
If the adjuster misses damage or underestimates scope, your contractor files a supplement with additional photo documentation and line-item pricing. This is common — initial estimates are often 20–40% below actual repair cost.
  • Day 45–60: Repair and close
Once approved and materials ordered, most residential roof replacements complete in 1–2 days. You receive warranty registration, manufacturer documentation, and before/after photos.

About storm chasers

After confirmed hail events, out-of-state crews canvas affected neighborhoods door to door. Many are legitimate, but some leave after collecting insurance proceeds. Before signing anything, ask for: a physical office address in your area, an Alabama Home Builders license number (ours is #52235), and a manufacturer certification. Ridgeline has operated from our Athens/Huntsville office since 2012.
