How to Increase Single-Ply Roof Membranes’ Durability

Single-ply roofing membranes are a cost-effective and lightweight, and resistant ultraviolet (UV) rays, making them a great choice for homeowners who want an easy-to-install yet durable layer of protection.

However, as the name suggests, these membranes are composed of only one layer and are, therefore, more vulnerable to moisture damage than other types of roofing. Having an idea on the factors that increase the risk of moisture penetrating your roof can help you prevent moisture damage.

Ridgeline Construction Roofing & Exteriors, one of the state’s top siding installation companies, shares some tips on preventing damage below.

Choose TPO Roof Membranes

There are two types of single-ply membranes: thermosets and thermoplastics (TPO). While the durability of these membranes has drastically improved in the last two decades thanks to advances in factory-fabricated seam tape technology, TPO membranes still have the advantage when it comes to durability. TPO membranes usually include a reinforcement layer, made of either polyester or fiberglass, to improve its durability.

To offset the disadvantage of having a thinner layer than other types of membranes, we recommend installing TPO roof membranes.

Install Termination Bars to Reduce ShrinkageA roofer working on a roof

All roofing membranes are vulnerable to shrinkage to a certain extent. The shrinkage, usually caused by thermal movement or the cycle of contraction and expansion due to temperature fluctuations, results in cracks and rips that could serve as openings for rainwater to penetrate your roof’s underlying layers. One way of minimizing this risk is by installing termination bars, which can resist shrinkage better than conventional adhesives.

Still not sure on which type of membrane’s the right one for your home? When in doubt, it’s always best to consult a contractor.
